Huge amounts of dust are generated wherever building or renovation takes place, and this contamination adversely affects not only the workers on the site but also the users of adjacent areas.
High concentrations of dust can be generated by many construction activities, not only by the use of angle grinders or by sandblasting, breaking and demolition work, but also by the mixing of dry mortars or tile adhesives. The dust often remains in the breathing air for hours. A building worker breathes in about 10,000 litres of air per working day. Up to 95 percent of the dust is breathed out again, coughed up or swallowed.
The remaining five percent, however, is not to be taken lightly and can cause serious illnesses. Dusts from stones containing quartz, synthetic mineral fibres, wood, cellulose and asbestos are particularly dangerous. Added to these the contamination by spores, allergens and micro-fibres that occurs, for example, during the rectification of damp course or mould damage.
The contamination of room air by foreign bodies is therefore more than just an unpleasant side effect. It can cause serious illnesses and must therefore be combated effectively, not least due to current regulations governing hazardous substances.
